CL级别CD使用指南:

近期各校反馈,有家长反映孩子在家听Spec系列CD时,觉得CD发音语速过快,孩子个别单词和句子听不懂,需要更好的解决方法。

从我自身带George学习Spec系列教材来看,我和孩子并没有觉得CD中的发音太快,而是外国人的正常语速。这就需要我们老师在与家长沟通中,把有效的学习方法告诉家长,让孩子在正确的方式下,听懂CD里的对话,提高听力能力。

我的方法是:不使用CD机,因为CD机使用起来非常不方便,而且容易坏,在孩子没有听懂时,就自动播放到下一节去了,这样就让孩子心里很急,从而影响了孩子的情绪,甚至不愿意去听CD。我采用的方法就是把CD里的音频导出并转换成MP3格式,然后把孩子学习的近期课程的MP3导入到电脑、笔记本、IPad和手机里,并将播放设置成单曲循环播放格式。这样,可以在任何时候,比如,每天早上送孩子去学校,下课后接孩子回家,等等,只要和孩子在一起,就把刚上的课的对话和词汇,播放给孩子听,不断加强孩子的听力能力,也可以随时随地把之前学的课程,也反复给孩子听,加强复习,孩子自然就不会觉得对话太快。同时,家长也可以让孩子跟着录音说,看孩子重复的是否正确,这样,孩子的对话和理解能力也得到强有力的提高。

要告知家长,语言的学习,要每时每刻地让孩子去接触,而不是单单在学校学习,更多的是需要家长的配合和监督,让孩子在良好的学习氛围中,潜移默化地不断积累学习成果,学习的效果也就自然好起来。

我已经将CL级别的有关CD音频文件,转换成MP3,并上传到网盘上,大家可以把相关链接下载地址发送给家长,让家长下载后,拷贝到自己的有关音频播放器中,随时随地地让孩子去听和练。下载链接地址如下:

I agree with Kevin's opinion that we don't need to slow down the SPEC CDs so students can understand them. The speed of the CDs is, for the most part, the speed of natural English conversation. Students need to get used to this speed. Putting it on loop is a good solution. It's easier to do that if it's an MP3, so that's definitely a solution we can recommend to parents.

But Shannon and I discussed this morning that we as teachers must also take responsibility for students not being able to complete their homework. During our recent training session in Shanghai, the trainer said that Shane Taiwan teachers are never, ever allowed to repeat after the CD during listening activities in class. If the students don't understand, the teacher simply plays the CD again until they get it.

At Shane Ningbo, many teachers (including myself) have had the habit in the past of echoing what the CD says during in class listening assignments. This makes it's easier for the students to understand. Although we definitely mean well, we're in fact doing the children a disservice, giving them an easy way out. At home, they don't have that luxury, so they find the homework hard to complete.

Ultimately, it's our responsibility as teachers to make sure the students are prepared to complete their homework and understand the class expectations. I don't feel we should put that responsibility on the parents. No teacher ever asked my mother to make me do my French homework. My teacher at Beyond Mandarin never told me to have my girlfriend help me complete my Chinese homework. The teachers asked me to do it.

The expectations we set in class play an important role in what the students do at home. We need to put the responsibility on the students, not the parents, to complete assignments. Isn't that one of our main selling points, after all? That we get students motivated to learn and study?

During the first few months of a CL class, we definitely need to seek out the parents help in reminding the students to complete the assignments we set for them. We set the expectations, and the parents help the students develop good study habits during the first few months. But after the students know the routine, they should become gradually more independent. The should complete the assignments because they're expected to, because we prepared them to do so, because they have to turn it in to the TA at the beginning of class every week, because the TA notices when they don't do it, and because they know the teacher will praise them when they're doing a good job.

It's great when parents are involved, but we're underestimating students if we don't expect them to eventually complete these assignments by themselves. If we make sure they're prepared and understand the expectations, we can help them do a better job of meeting the goals of the class.
